Iron is an important element required to produce Haem (the red part of blood cells) to enable the cells to carry oxygen to various tissues.

It's also stored away in the bone marrow, muscles and other tissues to be used when needed.


Iron is utilised by a variety of body processes, most importantly the production of red blood cells. The lack of which can result in Anaemia that can manifest in a myriad of ways:

  • Pallor
  • Lack of energy, lethargy
  • Breathlessness
  • Weakness
  • Poor appetite
  • Poor concentration, attention span
  • Poor immune system


  • Inadequate oral intake of iron. Eg: vegan diet, anorexia, eating disorders, systemic illnesses
  • Excessive blood loss. Eg: heavy periods, rectal bleeding, after complicated surgery or childbirth
  • Poor absorption from the gut. Eg: autoimmune diseases like coeliac disease, other chronic diseases


Iron infusions are indicated for those where replacement of iron by the intravenous route is the best possible way to manage their deficiency:

  • Unable to tolerate/absorb oral supplements
  • Inadequate replacement by oral supplements
  • Needs quicker replacement like in severe deficiency states
